  1. KateOS III is one of the most modern Linux distributions available.
  2. It is based on the latest technologies used in production systems,
  3. giving it a wide range of supported hardware, security, and efficiency.
  4. The new series also means new solutions. Beginning with version 3.0,
  5. we have a few new subprojects for developing a set of typically
  6. KateOS-ish system tools:

  8. * PKG - a base tool for managing TGZex packages; it lets the user install,
  9.     update, and remove packages locally. PKG has replaced the old package
  10.     management scripts, adding dependencies support and multilingual package
  11.     descriptions.
  12.  
  13. * libsmarttools - a C++ library containing a set of base classes and functions
  14.           helping in the development of system tools. Updateos2 and 
  15.           libupdateos have been created using libsmarttools.
  16.  
  17. * libupdateos - a C++ library containing classes and functions for remote TGZex
  18.         packages management. It is the base of the updateos2 tool.
  19.  
  20. * updateos2 - a tool for remotly installing and updating TGZex packages; a text]
  21.           interface for the libupdateos library.

  23. The system has been adapted for internationalization. Much effort has been made to
  24. make KateOS even more user-friendly while maintaining the simplicity of the system
  25. structure. Thanks to this, KateOS can be used with success by intermediate Unix
  26. users who need an efficient, secure, and practical system they can manage. KateOS
  27. is also a great solution for those who are only beginning their Linux adventure
  28. and want to learn thoroughly all the ins and outs of Linux. It will let them work
  29. comfortably right after the installation, and later take over the full control
  30. over the system step by step. All solutions used in KateOS maintain the traditional
  31. Linux file structure, thanks to which users experienced in KateOS will be able to
  32. easily switch to any other distro or Unix system.

  34. What is so special about KataeOS 3.0?
  35.  
  36. KateOS 3.0 fulfills all the resolutions of the new III series. It has been created
  37. from scratch, and independently of the previous versions. It has been built with
  38. the newest components, and with no obsolete solutions. It does not use the
  39. libtercamp or slang1 libraries. Also, other base system components have been
  40. updated, such as the readline libraries, ncurses and the bash shell. The most
  41. crucial elements have been chosen in a way which makes the system stay current for
  42. as long as two years, provided an appropriate configuration is used. All packages
  43. have been compiled with GCC 4.0.X thanks to which possible future problems
  44. connected with a shift to GCC 4.1 have already been eliminated. Thanks to the
  45. careful choice of all components, the system has possibly become the world's
  46. fastest distro! A greater part of the system can still work on i486-class
  47. processors, but multimedia applications and heavy graphical environments like
  48. GNOME and KDE have been optimized for i686 (Pentium 2-class or higher).
  49. KateOS 3.0 is also the first version with read and write support for NTFS
  50. partitions. This means that a big part of our users will be able to use the data
  51. amassed on Windows boxes, with no problem. During the creation of the systen,
  52. much attention has been paid to internationalization. All of the most popular
  53. programs (like Firefox and Thunderbird) are equipped with extra language packs
  54. which makes it much easier for German, French, Spanish, and Polish native
  55. speakers to enjoy KateOS. Another very important feature is the dependencies
  56. support, available already at the system installer level. It is certainly good
  57. news for intermediate Linux users who had problems using systems without
  58. dependency tracking. Also, the inclusion of the OpenOffice office suite, along
  59. with many language packs and dictionaries, has been an important decision.
  60. Thanks to it, the user will be able to begin office work immediately after the
  61. installation. KateOS 3.0 also has many more packages than the previous versions.
  62. It makes the entire system more complete, and gives the user a wide choice of
  63. tools for any given task. Ruby programmers will certainly be happy to hear that
  64. this language is now supported by KateOS, and available on the second installation
  65. disc in the D section. KateOS 3.0 takes full advantage of Udev, DBus and Hal. It
  66. features splendid hardware auto-detection and mobile data storage device (USB
  67. keys, CD/DVDs etc.) management. The default desktop is XFCE version 4.4.X
  68. featuring among other things desktop icons and multiple desktops. We have paid
  69. much attention to the look and feel of the dekstop. A well-chosen theme and
  70. wallpaper, along with the Tango icons, make it look nice and clean. There are
  71. thousands of changes in the system compared to the previous version, but would be
  72. impossible to list them all here; so let's just leave off with that, having
  73. enumerated the most important ones. We would like to encourage everyone to test
  74. the newest version of our system.
